Begins fishing in January when winter kings are on the bite throughout Kachemak bay. These kings range up to 40#'s and can be found throughout Kachemak Bay during all of the winter months. This fishery is on the rise as many local and Anchorage area anglers are just now becoming aware of the incredible fishing happening here all year round.
These "winter kings" are not like the local salmon that are in the area to find their natal streams and spawn, rather, these kings are in the area simply to feed and grow as part of their multi-year stint in the saltwater. Long known to local fisherman in many coastal communities these winter fish are in prime condition and hard to beat as fresh table fare.
The occasional lucky angler might land a "white" king. These special kings have white meat that is particularly high in oil content and simply can't be beat on the table
The next kings we pursue are fish that are on their way to spawn in many of Cook Inlets tributaries. From the Anchor River north we get an early shot at many fish from a variety of local gene pools. These Kings generally run from 10 to 40#'s. These saltwater salmon are fresh and strong just returning from several years feeding and growing in the open oceans.
After these first kings have gone into their streams and rivers of origin by the middle of June we have just a two or three week wait before we can expect to start seeing the first of the truly huge king salmon from the Kenai Rivers famous second run "July kings". These kings have been in the ocean for an average of about seven years and so have gotten a few extra years of growth allowing them to attain truly huge proportions.
